Meet Our Team
Lydia Suitt (she/her/hers)
I’m glad you’re here and want you to know there is hope for whatever you’re struggling with.
I often think in images and metaphors and one that comes to mind for counseling is navigating a difficult landscape. Each person’s “landscape” is unique - with its own key players, features, and challenges. And each person is unique with their own past experiences, inner strengths, hopes, and fears. As we work together to map out your landscape and the barriers you’re facing, I will bring in various tools and approaches to help you traverse your terrain.
Maybe you’re a couple struggling to connect, and your landscape includes past emotional wounds, present stressors from work and parenting responsibilities, and communication that often escalates into arguments. My approach may include coaching you in tools for healthy communication and helping you understand how you best connect and feel secure in relationships.
Or maybe you’re coming in for individual counseling because you’re often worried and on edge, or you struggle to find joy in daily life and access the motivation to take care of yourself. Your landscape may include past experiences that shaped your view of yourself and the world, present relationships that are more draining than uplifting, and routines or strategies that once worked for you but now keep you stuck. I will personalize the approach based on your needs.
While my specialization is in treating trauma-related issues (which can manifest in symptoms of depression, anxiety, interpersonal issues, low self-esteem, substance abuse, and disordered eating), I have experience treating adults, couples, and adolescents with a variety of presenting concerns.
One of my primary therapeutic modalities is EMDR, which is a trauma-focused approach to reprocessing past experiences. These past experiences can include what some call “big T” traumas like combat experiences and assaults as well as other experiences like bullying, emotional abuse or neglect, complicated grief, and frightening experiences that shape our nervous system and influence how we view ourselves and the world. Through EMDR, we can help heal underlying wounds that contribute to the symptoms I mentioned above. It’s an approach that may be helpful even if you don’t consider yourself to be someone who has experienced trauma. In addition to EMDR, I draw on a variety of other evidence-based modalities to utilize the most effective approach to helping you meet your goals.
As a little about me, my path to the counseling field was a winding one that led me through studies in the humanities, work experiences in higher education, and my own mental health journey. When I entered my Master’s program in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at William & Mary, I knew I had found the right field. It combined my passions for critical and creative thinking, self-development, and supporting others.
I moved to Tucson in the summer of 2023 after living in Virginia for five years and love living here. In my free time, you may find me reading by the pool, going on walks, spending time with friends and loved ones, or traveling to explore new places.
If you’re wondering whether I could be a good fit for your concerns, please schedule a consult so we can explore this together!
