What is EMDR?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a therapeutic technique that has gained significant attention for its effectiveness in treating trauma and improving mental health. By stimulating the brain’s natural ability to process and heal from distressing memories, EMDR can provide relief from triggers and symptoms such as anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

How Does EMDR Work?

EMDR involves a therapist guiding a client through a series of bilateral stimulations techniques (stimulating both hemispheres of the brain) such as eye movements, tapping, or listening to alternating sounds. While the client focuses on the traumatic memory, the therapist helps them to identify and process the negative emotions and beliefs associated with it. This process can help to reduce the emotional intensity or load of the memory and break the cycle of re-experiencing trauma through triggers.

Benefits of EMDR Therapy

Rapid symptom relief: Many clients experience significant improvement in their symptoms within a relatively short period of time.

  • Increased emotional regulation: EMDR, by reducing triggers, can help individuals better manage their emotions and reduce emotional reactivity.

  • Improved coping skills: Clients may experience an increased ability to utilize healthier coping mechanisms for dealing with stress and difficult situations.

  • Increase sense of self-worth: Overcoming trauma can lead to increased self-worth and a sense of empowerment.

 Who can benefit from EMDR?

EMDR has been found to be effective for a wide range of individuals, including:

  • Individuals with PTSD: EMDR is particularly effective for treating symptoms of PTSD, such as flashbacks, nightmares, and hypervigilance.

  • Survivors of trauma: Those who have experienced traumatic events such as accidents, violence, or natural disasters, may benefit from EMDR therapy.

  • People with anxiety or depression: EMDR can help address underlying trauma that may be contributing to anxiety or depression.

What does the research say about intensive EMDR therapy?

Intensive application of trauma-focused therapy seems to be well tolerated in individuals with PTSD and/or trauma related symptoms, enabling faster symptom reduction with similar, or even better, results, while reducing the risk that patients drop out prematurely.

Intensive EMDR treatment research indicates that there is improvement in trauma symptoms in a very short time frame.

An intensive program using EMDR therapy is a safe and effective treatment alternative for treating trauma and trauma related symptoms.

The economy is compelling: even compared to other trauma therapy, the intensive format may decrease treatment time, because of time not spent on:

  • checking in at the beginning of each session

  • addressing current crises and concerns

  • focusing on stabilizing and coping skills that the client won’t need after trauma healing

  • assisting the client in regaining composure at the end of the session.
