Meet Our Team

Melinda Straughn (she/her/hers)

I’m glad you’re here.

Emotions can feel hard. Relationships and communication can feel hard. Being human can feel hard. And sometimes we go through seasons of life feeling unseen, unheard, not supported, stuck, and alone. I want to be a safe space that can help. You matter and your emotions are valid.

As a teenager I had read a saying that all the darkness in the world cannot extinguish the light of even a small candle. The beauty of that saying has stuck with me, even through my career as a therapist. In my work, I am able to watch others realize the small candles in their lives that they have not been paying attention to or forgot were there. Sometimes we just need a little bit of guidance to return our gaze to the light, to the good, and find peace.

My style of therapy has transformed as I earned my Licensed Professional Counseling (LPC), and now my style is more person-centered, and emotionally focused. So whether I am working with a kid, teen, or adult, I focus on the person in front of me. We can play games, draw, or just sit and talk while I hold space for you to place down the weight of your emotions, struggles, and thoughts. There are times where I may incorporate some CBT techniques to challenge unhelpful/anxious thoughts. I may also incorporate some emotion-focused therapy techniques or inner child work, and help you explore and transform the relationship you have with your emotions, thoughts, and self.

Christian counseling is another modality I can use, though not required by any means. Christian Counseling is not spiritual direction or pastoral counseling, but just being able to bring aspects of the Christian faith, scripture, and prayer with regular therapy in order to help the client feel supported, if requested.

I have my Bachelor’s of Science from the University of Arizona, and my Master’s of Science in Christian Counseling from Grand Canyon University. I work with clients that are dealing with hard emotions and experiences, like with anxiety, grief, daily stress, and depression. I also am able to help people on an individual level with healthy relationships, communication, and self-esteem and worth. I will be patient and gentle as I help clients learn that emotions are neutral signals, how to cope and ground themselves, what true self-care is, or even help adults heal from childhood trauma and negative self-beliefs.

You do not have to walk this journey on your own. Therapy can help and a key aspect to that is to find a therapist that is the right fit for you.
