Your EMDR Questions Answered
One of the most exciting techniques used in therapy over the past few decades is EMDR. Read on to find out more about it.
What is EMDR?
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It’s a technique that allows a person to access memories in a safe space, reprocessing them through visual and tactile cues.
Why is EMDR different?
EMDR allows a person to reframe a memory at the biological level. Your brain is literally healing itself, removing blocks that keep you from progressing in your mental health.
What can I expect in an EMDR session?
After several sessions to gather history and gain tools to handle emotional distress, a trained therapist will guide you through a series of stimulations–using flashing lights (for eye stimulation) and a hand-held device (for tactile stimulation). Together, you’ll recall any memories you’d like to “unblock,” working to reprocess the event in a healthy and productive way. In the time following the session, both you and the therapist will keep track of your emotional and mental wellbeing.
Who can benefit from EMDR?
